Questions and Answers for November, 2000

Question

The usage of "one" as subject.
"If one hasn't done one's homework, one will be punished tomorrow."
Is the sentence correct?  Should 'one' be replaced by 'his' or 'her' after comma?

Answer

The sentence is fine as it is written. Using "his" or "her" limits the
applicability to a certain gender. Or it can be interpreted as an assumption
that sexist language is OK. The indefinite pronoun "one" is correct.

However, perhaps the sentence can be written differently in order to avoid
the repetition of "one."

Examples:
Anyone not doing the homework will be punished tomorrow.
Those not doing their homework will be punished tomorrow.
